HAYWARD, Calif. – After being swept in a four-game series by Sonoma State to open CCAA play, the Pioneer baseball team will host UC San Diego in a four-game series on March 2-4. The two teams will play a single game on March 2 at Pioneer Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. On March 3, the two teams will play a doubleheader and conclude the four-game series with a single game on March 4, with both scheduled for an 11:00 a.m. first pitch.
East Bay, currently on a five-game losing streak, is 0-4 in CCAA play and 5-8 for the season.
Andrew Woolfe, the Pioneers leading hitter with a .364 batting average, is third in overall slugging percentage in the CCAA (.682). Woolfe is tied for second in the CCAA with three home runs, sixth in total bases with 30 and seventh in runs scored with 13.
Jordan Wilder is having a solid season for the Pioneers batting .341 and is tied with Woolfe for team honors with nine RBI.
Eddie Rettagliata is hitting .325 with two home runs while
Kyle Zozaya has a .317 batting average with eight runs scored and seven RBI in 41 plate appearances.
Sophomore hurler
Ben O'Bryan is 1-0 with six strikeouts in seven innings of work.
Bryce Miller (1-1) is ninth with a 2.37 ERA and third with 25 strikeouts among CCAA pitchers. Miller has 20 strikeouts in his last two starts. AJ Gallardo, coming off a sharp outing against Sonoma State, is 1-0 with a 0.73 ERA.
UC San Diego enters the weekend series with a 6-10 overall record and 4-4 in CCAA action. The Tritons
took three out of four games against the Pioneers en route to capturing the 2011 CCAA regular season title. Leading hitter Nick La Face (.333) ranks third in doubles with eight and seventh in runs batted in with 13 in the CCAA. Garrett Tuck, batting .328 for the season, is seventh in the CCAA with 19 hits. Danny Susdorf is tied for top honors in the CCAA with eight stolen bases.
Following the four-game series, the Pioneers will play at San Jose State on March 6. East Bay will resume CCAA play against Cal State Stanislaus on March 9-11.
