Pioneers Lose Heartbreaker in Second Game of Doubleheader Sweep at Sonoma State

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. –
The Pioneer baseball team built a 3-0 fifth inning lead in the second game of their doubleheader against Sonoma State. East Bay held on to 5-4 advantage going to the bottom of the ninth inning. The Seawolves answered with two runs in the bottom of the ninth to win 6-5 and complete the doubleheader and four-game series sweep over the Pioneers.  Sonoma State won the first game, 12-7.

Pioneer hurler Ben O'Bryan, making his first start of the season, held the Seawolves scoreless for five innings on one hit and one strikeout.

The Pioneers broke the scoreless tie with a run in the top of the fourth inning.  Kyle Zozaya singled to open the inning, advanced to third on a Kenny Uyetake base hit and scored on Eddie Rettagliata's sacrifice bunt.

East Bay increased its lead to 3-0 with two runs in the fifth inning. Eric Rowen led off the inning with a single and moved to third on a base hit by Jordan Wilder. Alex Anicich followed with a single to score Rowen. Wilder came home on Zozaya's groundout.

Garrett Gooselaw two-run single in the bottom of the sixth, cut the Pioneers' lead to 3-2.

The Pioneers added a run in the seventh inning on an Andrew Woolfe sacrifice fly.

Sonoma State tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the eighth highlighted by a solo home run by Gooselaw, his third round tripper of the series.

East Bay loaded the bases in the top of the ninth and took a 5-4 lead when Tanner Laran singled to drive in Woolfe.

Scott Templeton walked to open the bottom of the ninth inning. Jeff Boulware singled to advance Templeton to third. Templeton scored on a wild pitch by Pioneer hurler Zachary Wong to tie the game. Kevin Cramer reached on a walk to put runners at first and second. Felipe Carvajal replaced Wong and got Justin Serrao to foul out. Jackson Stogner  was intentionally walked to load the bases. Jeff Johnson hit a sacrifice fly to score pinch runner Garrett Schwartz with the winning run.  

In the first game, the Pioneers opened the scoring with two runs in the first inning. David Castillo accounted for both Pioneer runs with a two-run single. Sonoma State answered with three runs in the bottom of the first, highlighted by a Johnson RBI single.

The Seawolves scored a run in the second and two unearned runs in the fifth inning to increase their lead to 6-2.
A four-run, fifth inning, enabled the Seawolves to take a 10-2 advantage.

East Bay got back in the game with four runs in the top of the sixth. Charlie Sharrer opened the inning with a strikeout, but was safe at first on a wild pitch. Eddie Rettagliata followed with a single. Sharrer scored on Kenny Uyetake's base hit. The next batter, Brett Hall hit a three-run home run, his first round tripper of the season. Sonoma State parlayed four hits into a run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Wilder was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to push across a run for the Pioneers in the top of the sevent to narrow the Seawolves' lead to 11-7.

Woolfe led off the top of the eighth inning with a double. The next hitter, Zozaya, was hit by a pitch.  Reliever Paul Anaya proceeded to retire the next three hitters to end a Pioneer scoring threat. Sonoma State added a run in the bottom of the eighth.

Seven different Pioneers had a hit in the first game. Hall had three RBI's while Castillo drove in a pair of runs. Sharrer scored twice.

Jackson Stogner banged out four hits to lead a 20-hit Seawolves attack. Steven Filippi drove in three runs.
