HAYWARD, Calif. – The Pioneer baseball team opened CCAA play with a doubleheader setback to Sonoma State. The scores were 10-2 and 1-0 in eight innings.
In the second game, Sonoma State (6-6, 4-2 CCAA) took advantage of two Pioneer errors to score the only run of the game in the eighth inning.
Pioneer starting pitcher AJ Gallardo tossed a gem against the Seawolves. The senior from Ventura held Sonoma State scoreless for seven innings on four hits and six strikeouts.
The Pioneers (5-6, 0-2 CCAA) had their chances to score in the second game, but stranded two runners in the first and five innings and left the tying run at second in the eighth.

Bob Ralston said. “We had our chances to score, but couldn't get that run home.”
Kyle Zozaya had three hits for the Pioneers.
The Seawolves' Michael Garber hurled the final 2.2 innings of scoreless ball to pick up the win.
Garrett Gooselaw hit a pair of home runs and drove in four runs to lead the Sewolves to victory in the first game.
Sonoma State broke open a close game with three runs in the sixth and four more runs in the ninth inning.

Bryce Miller allowed five runs on six hits and recorded eight strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work.
Zozaya and
Tanner Laran each drove in a run for the Pioneers.
Thomas Lee pitched eight innings of seven-hit ball to get the win for Sonoma State.
The two teams will conclude the four-game series with a doubleheader at Rohnert Park.
“Today's doubleheader was very disappointing,” Ralston said. “We have to regroup and get ready for tomorrow.”
