HAYWARD, Calif. - The Pioneers erupted for 12 runs on 13 hits in a 12-4 victory over Westmont College, before senior hurler
Brandyn Bell tossed a four-hit shutout as the Pioneers defeated Menlo College, 2-0, on February 12.
Game 1: Cal State East Bay 12, Westmont 4
Cal State East Bay struck early with two runs in the first inning.
Brett Hall walked to open the inning and later scored on a double by
Andrew Woolfe. A groundout by
Kyle Zozaya brought Woolfe home with the second run of the inning.
Eddie Rettagliata hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the second to give the Pioneers a 4-0 lead.
Westmont narrowed the Pioneers advantage to 4-2 with two unearned runs in the third inning.
The Pioneers extended their lead to 7-2 with three runs in the fifth inning. Zozaya and
David Castillo each drove in a run.
Woolfe led off the bottom of the seventh with his second home run of the season.
Cal State East Bay scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth highlighted by a two-run single by
Jordan Wilder.
Pioneer winning hurler
Bryce Miller looked good in his season debut scattering six hits on two runs, both unearned in six innings of work. He had five strikeouts and two walks.
Woolfe was 3-for-5 at the plate with three runs scored and three RBIs. Wilder and
Tanner Laran each had three hits.
Game 2: Cal State East Bay 2, Menlo 0
Bell threw 113 pitches in nine innings of worked. He recorded nine strikeouts and only one walk. At one point, Bell retired eight straight Menlo batters.
“I felt the same all the way through nine innings,” Bell said. “My curve and slider was working effectively on their right handed batters and my fastball had good jump today.”
Menlo College received a good outing from starting pitcher Derek Rodrigues who allowed one run on five hits in seven innings.
The Pioneers broke the scoreless tie with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out,
Alex Anicich tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Andrew Woolfe.
Cal State East Bay added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Woolfe was hit by a pitch and later came home on a single off the bat of
Jake Davis.
With the victory, the Pioneers are off to an impressive 4-1 start.
“I'm blown away with our start,” Bell said. “We're hitting the ball and getting better with every game.”
Cal State East Bay will host Northwest Nazarene in a four-game series beginning with a doubleheader on February 17.
