Pioneers Conclude 2011 Campaign with Victory Over Grand Canyon

PHOENIX, Ariz. –
The Pioneer baseball team ended the 2011 campaign on a successful note and completed a three-game sweep over Grand Canyon University 4-3 on May 1.

Cal State East Bay finished the season with a four-game winning streak and ended the 2011 campaign with an 18-32 record. Grand Canyon University stands at 21-26 for the season.

Nick McManus and Jared Berrier each had run scoring singles while Chris Houston came home on a wild pitch as the Pioneers jumped out to a 3-0 first inning lead.

Leading 3-1, the Pioneers added another run in the sixth inning. With one out, McManus singled and later scored on a fielder's choice.

Grand Canyon closed the Pioneers' lead to 4-3 with two runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Pioneer closer Zachary Wong retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth to pick up his sixth save of the season.

Starter Bryce Miller improved to 5-6 for the season as he allowed two earned runs on seven hits in 6.1 innings. Miller recorded four strikeouts. Relievers Johnny Volk and Zach Aguirre held Grand Canyon scoreless for 1.2 innings.

Berrier drove in a pair of runs while McManus and Houston each had two hits.

McManus concluded the 2011 season with a team-high .333 batting average.
