HAYWARD, Calif. - The Cal State East Bay baseball team opened a four-game series with Cal State Dominguez Hills with a 17-1 loss on Friday afternoon. The Pioneers (9-25, 7-20) hung with the Toros through four innings before CSUDH broke open the game with 16 runs in the final five innings of play.
East Bay jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Nick McManus solo home run. For McManus, it was his second home run of the season.
Cal State Dominguez Hills tied the game 1-1 in the third inning as Kevin Pillar singled to drive in Kevin Logan who led off the inning with an infield hit.
The Toros took a 3-1 lead in the fifth.
Carlos Leyva hit a three-run home run as Cal State Dominguez Hills added four runs in the sixth inning to take a 7-1 advantage.
Jonathan Keener hit his fifth home run of the season, a two-run shot in a Toro 6-run eighth inning.
Cal State Dominguez Hills closed the scoring with three runs in the ninth inning.
Lincoln Clapper had three hits including a double for the Pioneers. McManus also had three hits and improved his team-leading batting average to .341.
With the victory, Cal State Dominguez Hills is 12-17 in CCAA play and 16-20 overall. The Pioneers are 7-20 in the CCAA and 9-25 for the season.
The two teams will continue the four-game series on April 9 with a doubleheader at Pioneer Field beginning at 11:00 a.m.
