Impressive Pitching Performances Kick Off Series with Chico State

HAYWARD, Calif. –
Cal State East Bay's Zach Aguirre and Chico State's Kevin Brahney clashed in classic pitching duel on April 21 at Pioneer Field.

In a game that took only two hours and five minutes, Chico State pushed across an unearned run in the sixth inning to defeat the Pioneers, 2-1.

Aguirre hurled a gem as he retired the first 12 Wildcat hitters he faced and recorded four strikeouts in the process. He held the Wildcats to two a pair of runs on four hits and one earned run in 8.2 innings.

Brahney improved to 2-3 for the season allowing one run on two hits and recording 11 strikeouts. During one stretch, Brahney retired 14 straight Pioneer hitters.

Cal State East Bay opened the scoring with a run in the first inning. Charlie Sharrer opened the inning with a triple and later scored on an infield out.

The Wildcats tied the game in the fifth as Adrian Bringas doubled and scored on a wild pitch.

In the sixth inning, the Wildcats' Michael Schultz doubled and moved to third on an error. Schultz scored on a suicide squeeze.

With one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, Pioneer pinch hitter Jared Berrier doubled. Chico State closer Juan Guerra got the next two Pioneer hitters to strikeout and groundout to pick up his 11th save of the season.

Chico State remains in first place in the CCAA with a 20-7 record. The Wildcats are 26-8 overall.

The Pioneers are 11-26 in CCAA play and 13-31 overall.

The four-game series will continue with a single game on April 22 at Pioneer Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
