HAYWARD, Calif. -
Junior Pioneer hurler Brandyn Bell tossed his second shutout of the season as Cal State East Bay swept Cal State Monterey Bay in a doubleheader 7-6 and 3-0 on April 16.

Bell, who improved to 4-2 for the season, blanked the Otters in the second game on three hits and recorded six strikeouts in seven innings. He faced 26 batters.

“Bell pitched a gem this afternoon,” Pioneer head coach Dirk Morrison said. “He had good command and went after their hitters.”

The Pioneers took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Charlie Sharrer walked to open the inning and later scored on an error.

Andrew Woolfe opened the second inning with a base hit and came home on Scott Shields' single.

East Bay scored its final run in the fourth inning as Woolfe came home on a wild pitch.

Woolfe was 1-for-3 at the plate and scored twice in the Pioneers' second game victory.

The first game had four lead changes. The Otters opened the scoring in the first on a Randall Packard run scoring double.

Cal State East Bay tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Woolfe was safe on a catcher's interference and later scored on Shields' groundout.

In the top of the seventh inning, the Otters scored four times to take a 5-1 advantage. Packard knocked in two runs with a double.

The Pioneers rallied with five runs in the bottom of the seventh. Trailing 5-2 with two outs, Chris Houston singled to drive in a couple of runs including Lincoln Clapper who reached on an error. Woolfe drove in two runs with a double.

Cal State Monterey Bay tied the game with a run in the top of the eighth.

Cal State East Bay scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Jake Davis singled and came home on a Sharrer sacrifice fly.

Reliever Zachary Wong, who entered the game in the eighth inning, hurled a scoreless ninth to pick up the win. Wong is 2-1 for the season.

Pioneer starting pitcher Bryce Miller allowed four runs on eight hits with six strikeouts in 6.2 innings.
Houston and Woolfe each drove in a pair of runs while Sharrer had two singles.

“This was a good doubleheader sweep for us,” Morrison said. In the first game which was a back and fourth affair, we came up with big hits especially in the seventh innings. Besides the solid in the second game, we came up with a couple of big bunts and scored enough runs to win.”

The doubleheader sweep improves the Pioneers CCAA record to 11-24. Cal State East Bay is 13-29 for the season.

Cal State Monterey Bay drops to 12-14 in the CCAA and 15-20 overall.

The four-game series will conclude on April 17 with a single game at Cal State Monterey Bay. The first pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
