Pioneers Unable to Hold Early Lead in Defeat at Cal State Monterey Bay

MONTEREY, Calif. -
The Pioneer baseball team jumped out to an early 3-1 lead, but were unable to hold off Cal State Monterey Bay in a 7-4 CCAA defeat on April 15.

With the loss, the Pioneers are 9-24 in CCAA play and 11-29 overall. Cal State Monterey Bay improves to 12-12 in the CCAA and 15-18 for the season.

The Pioneers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first as Charlie Sharrer reached on an error, advanced to third on a balk and came home on Lincoln Clapper's infield out.

The Otters pushed across an unearned run to tie the game in the bottom of the second.

Nick McManus hit his third home run of the season, a two-run shot, to give the Pioneers a 3-1 advantage in the third inning.

Tyler Young doubled home a run while Tommy George had a RBI single highlighting a three-run, third inning to give the Otters a 4-3 advantage.

The Otters extended their lead to 7-3 with a run in the fourth and two more runs in the fifth inning. Young and Nolan Murray each had a RBI double in the fifth.

Scott Shields led off the top of the seventh with a double and later scored on a Sharrer groundout.

Cal State East Bay had runners at first and third in the ninth, but Otter reliever Jake Paolinetti struck out pinch hitter Chris Houston and got Sharrer on a groundout to earn his second save of the season.

Sharrer scored a pair of runs while Shields was 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored. Pioneer reliever Zach Aguirre allowed two runs on seven hits with four strikeouts in 4.2 innings.

The four-game series will resume with an April 16 doubleheader at Cal State East Bay. The first pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
