LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Pioneer baseball team lost a tough 14-13 decision to Cal State L.A. in the first game of a doubleheader on March 5. The Eagles completed the doubleheader sweep with a 7-0 victory in the second game.
After being blanked the day before, the Pioneers erupted for four runs in the first inning of the opener.
Andrew Woolfe drove in two runs with a double to left center.
Jared Berrier knocked in another run with a single.
Charlie Sharrer scored the Pioneers' fourth run on a passed ball. East Bay added another run in the second inning.
Cal State L.A. cut the Pioneers' margin to 5-4 after three innings. East Bay extended its lead to 7-4 in the fourth as
Rex Blaylock scored on a wild pitch and Sharrer drove in
Nick McManus with a double.
Leading 7-6, the Pioneers scored a single run in the sixth inning as McManus doubled and later scored on another double off the bat of Woolfe.
Cal State L.A. took a 10-8 lead with four runs in the bottom of the sixth highlighted by a two-run double by Manny Acosta.
Trailing 11-8, the Pioneers scored twice in the top of the eighth as Berrier had a run scoring single while
Josh Rush drove in Sharrer with a sacrifice fly.
Brian Compton hit a two-run triple as Cal State L.A. extended its lead to 13-10 after eight innings.
The Pioneers tied the game 13-13 with three runs in the top of the ninth inning. McManus had a run-scoring double while
Jake Davis drove in a pair of runs with an infield single.
The Eagles won the game in the bottom of the ninth as Chad Nacapoy was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Blaylock was 3-for-4 at the plate with four runs scored. Woolfe had three hits and three RBIs. Davis and Berrier each drove in a pair of runs.
Noe Flores was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate with four RBIs while Compton and Brian Moon each homered for Cal State L.A.
In the second game, Cal State L.A. hurler Gabriel Asakura tossed a one hitter and recorded nine strikeouts. Moon hit a solo home run while Joe Park and Manny Acosta each drove in a pair of runs for the Eagles.
Berrier had the Pioneers lone hit.
Cal State L.A. improves to 9-2 in CCAA and 14-5 for the season. East Bay stands at 2-9 in the CCAA and 4-14 overall.
The four game series will conclude on March 6 with a single game at Cal State L.A. The first pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
