HAYWARD, Calif. – The Pioneer baseball team came up short in a 6-5 CCAA defeat to Cal State San Bernardino on March 13.
The Coyotes opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first highlighted by a RBI double by Erik Ornelas and a run-scoring single off the bat of Nick Heusterberg.
East Bay came right back with two runs in the bottom of the first. With one out,
Jared Berrier had a bunt single and
Andrew Woolfe was safe on an error. Berrier scored on a
Nick McManus single. Woolfe later scored on a base hit by
Charlie Sharrer.
David Silvas put the Coyotes ahead 3-2 with a solo home run in the fifth inning. Cal State San Bernardino added an unearned run in the fifth. Ornelas drove home Eric Dow with a single to increase the Coyotes' lead to 5-2 in the sixth.
Once again, the Pioneers rallied with a run in the bottom of the sixth as Sharrer scored on a wild pitch.
In the top of the seventh, Heusterberg doubled to drive in Silvas with the Coyotes' sixth run of the game.
The Pioneers narrowed the Coyotes lead to 6-5 with two runs in the bottom of the eighth. Sharrer opened the inning with a double and later scored on another wild pitch. Berrier drove in
Scott Shields with a single for the Pioneers second run of the inning. The Pioneers left runners at second and third as Coyote reliever Trevor Longfellow struck out Woolfe and McManus.
With two outs in the bottom of the ninth,
Jake Davis singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Coyote closer Josh Pond picked up his third save of the series and sixth of the season by striking out Shields to end the game.
Sharrer was 3-for-5 at the plate while Berrier and McManus each had two hits. Pioneer closer
Zachary Wong threw a scoreless ninth inning.
The Pioneers are 3-13 in CCAA play and 5-18 for the season. Cal State San Bernardino improves to 6-4 in the CCAA and 9-9 overall.
Cal State East Bay will play San Francisco State in a four-game series beginning with a single game on March 18 at Pioneer Field.
