HAYWARD, Calif. -
The Pioneer baseball team used solid pitching, good defense and timely hitting in a 2-1 CCAA win over Cal State San Bernardino on March 11.

With the victory, the Pioneers snap a five-game losing streak and improve to 3-10 in CCAA action. East Bay is 5-15 for the season. Cal State San Bernardino is 3-4 in the CCAA and 6-9 overall.

The Pioneers received a pair of solid outings by pitchers Brandyn Bell and Zachary Wong. Bell evened his record at 1-1 as he scattered nine hits and allowed a home run in seven innings of work. Wong hurled two scoreless innings to record his second save of the season.

East Bay pulled off a season-best four double plays including a game-turning play in the fifth inning. With the game tied 1-1, the Coyotes had a runner at third with one out. Erik Ornelas hit a fly ball to deep centerfield. The Pioneers' Charlie Sharrer made the catch and threw a strike to catcher Josh Rush who did a masterful job to hold on to the ball to nail runner Ethan Chapman and complete the double play.

“With a runner at third, I had to throw the ball as hard as I could and make the play,” Sharrer said. “Josh made a great play at home.”

Sharrer gave the Pioneers a 2-1 lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth. For Sharrer, it was his first home run of the season.

Cal State San Bernardino had the tying run at third with two outs in the top of the ninth inning. Wong got pinch hitter Bryce Holland to ground out ending the game and giving the Pioneers the hard earned victory.

Lincoln Clapper contributed to the Pioneer win with two hits and a run scoring infield single in the fourth inning.

“Our team was up for this game following a good week of practice, Sharrer said. “Both pitchers did a good job and we played small ball and came up with four double plays to win today.”

The four game series will continue with a doubleheader on March 12 at Pioneer Field. The first game will begin at 11:00 a.m.
