HAYWARD, Calif. - Cal State East Bay and Vanguard University split a doubleheader on February 5 with the Pioneers winning the first game, 3-1 while the Lions took the second contest, 7-1.
In the first game, Pioneer hurler
Bryce Miller pitched seven strong innings to pick up the victory. Miller blanked the Lions on five hits while recording two strikeouts.
“The first two innings, I was relying on my fastball,”
Bryce Miller said. “After the second inning, every pitch was working. I was happy with my outing.”
East Bay scored twice in the fifth inning.
Josh Rush opened the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt.
Lincoln Clapper followed with a double to score Rush. Clapper later scored on an error.
The Pioneers added an insurance run in the seventh inning. Vanguard got on the scoreboard in the ninth inning on a solo home run by Tyson Leighton.
Pioneer reliever
Nolan Cassidy picked up the save. Clapper was 3-for-5 at the plate. Rush had a pair of hits.
Leighton was 3-for-4 at the plate for Vanguard.
The Lions won the rubber game of the three-game series with a 7-1 victory in the second contest of the doubleheader.
Vanguard opened the scoring with two runs in the first and added five runs in the last four innings.
Nick McManus doubled to drive in
Jared Berrier with the Pioneers' lone run in the third inning.
The Lions' Gabriel Garcia hurled five innings of six-hit ball to improve his record to 2-1 in the young season. Jeremiah Mejia, Bryce Arroyo and Brandon Pesante all homered for Vanguard.
McManus had a pair of hits for the Pioneers.
Vanguard improves to 4-3 for the season while the Pioneers stand at 1-2.
The Pioneers will host Central Washington in a four-game series beginning on February 11.
