HAYWARD, Calif. - The Pioneer baseball team dropped their season opener to visiting Vanguard University, 12-4, on February 4.
Vanguard opened the scoring in the second inning with three runs highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Bryson Rahier. The Lions broke the game open with six runs in the next three innings.
East Bay got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Skyler Ellis walked with the bases loaded to score the Pioneers' first run.
Jake Davis followed with a two-run single scoring
Charlie Sharrer and
Scott Shields.
The Pioneers scored their final run of the game in the eighth as
Nick McManus doubled to drive in
Rex Blaylock who earlier singled.
Sharrer and Davis each had a pair of hits for the Pioneers. Reliever
Xavier De La Cruz allowed two earned run runs with three strikeouts in three innings of work.
Vanguards' starting pitcher Antonio Peraza picked up the victory blanking the Pioneers for six innings. Rahier and Kyle Hardman each drove in three runs for the Lions.
The two teams will play a doubleheader on February 5 at Pioneer Field. The first game will begin at 11 a.m.
