HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay and Cal State Stanislaus split a doubleheader on February 27. The Pioneers won the first game, 5-1, while the Warriors took the second contest and three of four in the series, 5-1.
In the first game, Pioneer pitcher
A.J. Gallardo tossed his second complete game of the season. Gallardo (3-1), held Cal State Stanislaus to one run on five hits with six strikeouts. At one point, Gallardo retired 15 out of 16 Warrior hitters.
“I'm working real hard to extend my innings,” Gallardo said. I feel good and I'm confident right now. Today, I stayed with the fastball in the early innings and I was getting my curve over for strikes.”
The Pioneers, who banged out 10 hits in the game, scored four runs in the third inning.
Hector Iribe's groundout scored
Josh Rush with the first run.
Nick McManus singled to drive in
Dylan Johnson.
Lincoln Clapper followed with another single to
Andrew Woolfe.
Chris Houston singled to drive in McManus with the fourth run of the inning.
East Bay scored another run in the fourth as Woolfe singled to knock in
Jared Berrier who earlier doubled.
Woolfe was 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of RBI's. Clapper had two hits and drove in a run.
Three Warrior pitchers combined to hold the Pioneers to one run on seven hits in the second game. Starting pitcher Chris Short improved to 2-0 for the season allowing one run on four hits. Leonard Giammanco hurled a scoreless ninth inning to record his second save of the season.
The Warriors scored three runs in the third inning highlighted by Kory Vitato's two-run double.
Dylan Johnson singled home
Jake Davis with the Pioneers' lone run in the bottom of the fifth.
The Pioneers received a strong outing from relievers
Xavier De La Cruz and Ben Wong who blanked the Warriors for 5.1 innings.
McManus, Sharrer, and Johnson all had two hits for the Pioneers.
Cal State East Bay is 2-6 in CCAA play and 4-11 overall. Cal State Stanislaus stands at 4-2 in the CCAA and 10-2 for the season.
The Pioneers will play a four-game series at Cal State LA beginning on March 4.
