LA JOLLA, Calif. - The Cal State East Bay Pioneer baseball team was swept in a doubleheader by No. 1 UC San Diego 1-0 and 10-4 to open CCAA play on February 19.
In the first game, the Pioneers received an outstanding performance from starting hurler
Bryce Miller. In a complete game effort, Miller allowed one run on three hits with two strikeouts and three walks. After the third inning, Miller didn't allow a hit and picked off two Triton runners.
UC San Diego hurler Tim Shibuya improved to 3-0 for the season as he blanked the Pioneers on one hit while recording four strikeouts in seven innings. Elias Tuma held the Pioneers scoreless in the final two innings to record the save.
The Tritons scored the lone run of the game in the third inning. Aaron Bauman doubled and later scored on another double off the bat of Danny Susdorf.
In the second game, the Pioneers took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Andrew Woolfe had a RBI double while
Nick McManus knocked in a run with a single to account for the Pioneers' two runs. Nick Hom hit a two-run single as the Tritons tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the first.
UC San Diego went ahead 5-2 in the second ignited by a two-run double off the bat of Kyle Saul.
Hom hit a solo home run in the third as the Tritons increased their lead to 6-2. UC San Diego secured the doubleheader sweep with two runs in the bottom of the seventh.
The Pioneers added solo runs in the sixth and ninth innings.
Hector Iribe doubled home
Josh Rush who earlier singled in the sixth.
Rush was 3 for 4 at the plate while McManus had a pair of hits in four at-bats.
The Tritons improve to 9-1 for the season and 2-0 in the CCAA.
East Bay stands at 0-2 in CCAA action and 2-7 overall.
The four-game series will conclude with a February 20 doubleheader beginning at 10:00 a.m.
