HAYWARD, Calif. - Junior AJ Gallardo hurled a complete game victory as the Cal State East Bay baseball team earned a split with Central Washington in a February 12th doubleheader played at Pioneer Field.
Gallardo, a JC transfer from Ventura College, evened his record at 1-1 as he allowed two runs in the first inning on six hits and six strikeouts. Gallardo didn't walk a batter and retired the last eight Wildcat batters.
Trailing 2-0, the Pioneers tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the third inning. With runners on second and third and one out,
Nick McManus singled to right field to drive in Bradley Rich and
Jared Berrier.
The Pioneers scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Woolfe opened the inning with a double and advanced to third on an infield out.
Charlie Sharrer drove in Woolfe with a double.
In the first game, Central Washington erupted for six runs on six hits in the third inning. David Leid hit a solo home run while Brett Bielec tripled home a run as the Wildcats added three runs in the fifth inning.
The Pioneers scored three runs in the fifth with the big blow a two-run single by Berrier.
East Bay narrowed the Wildcats' lead to 9-5 with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. McManus hit a sacrifice fly while Sharrer knocked in Woolfe with a double to account for the Pioneers two runs.
Berrier was 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI's while Sharrer had a pair of hits.
For the second straight game, the Pioneers received a solid outing from the bullpen. Reliever
Johnny Volk hurled 4.1 innings of scoreless baseball yielding four hits and recording two strikeouts.
Cal State East Bay is 2-4 for the season. Central Washington has an overall record of 2-3.
The four-game series will conclude on February 13th with a single game at Pioneer Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
