HAYWARD, Calif. — Cal State East Bay closed its series against Cal State San Marcos with a 5-3 win Sunday at Pioneer Field.
The breakthrough came all at once.
After falling behind 1-0, East Bay flipped the game in the fourth with a five-run inning that created all the offense it would need. Dylan Unangst drove in two with a double to center, Micah Cervantes followed with an RBI groundout, and Cristian Angulo lined a two-run single to left as the Pioneers turned a deficit into a 5-1 lead.
San Marcos pushed back in the sixth. Canon King tripled in a run, and Jacob Embleton followed with an RBI groundout to trim the margin to 5-3, but East Bay kept the Cougars from getting any closer.
That was enough for the pitching staff to finish it.
Jaxen McAdara worked four innings in the start, allowing one run while navigating traffic throughout. Hunter Timothy earned the win with two innings of relief, and AJ Gamboa closed the door over the final three innings for the save.
East Bay finished with eight hits. Cervantes collected two hits and drove in a run on a groundout, while Angulo also had two hits and two RBIs. Unangst added the key two-run double in the fourth.
Cal State East Bay travels to Cal State San Bernardino next week for a CCAA series.
