HAYWARD, Calif. — Cal State East Bay dropped both ends of Saturday's doubleheader against Cal State San Marcos, falling 10-6 in the opener before an 8-2 decision in game two at Pioneer Field.
The first game slipped late.
East Bay built momentum early, taking a 5-4 lead into the middle innings after a three-run sixth. Logan Stelling drove in two runs during that stretch, while Alijah Ramos added an RBI as the Pioneers briefly moved in front.
That advantage didn't hold.
San Marcos responded in the ninth, stringing together hits and capitalizing on free passes to plate six runs and turn a one-run deficit into a four-run lead. The late surge proved decisive as East Bay was unable to answer in the bottom half.
The Pioneers finished with 11 hits in the game, with Caleb Chance leading the way with three. Ramos, Christian Angulo and Dylan Unangst each added multi-hit efforts.
The second game followed a different path, with San Marcos taking control early and maintaining it throughout.
A four-run third inning gave the Cougars the lead, and they added on in the fourth and sixth to extend the margin. East Bay's offense was limited to six hits, with Stelling accounting for one run on an RBI double.
East Bay added another run later in the game on a sacrifice fly, but could not close the gap.
On the mound, the Pioneers used multiple arms across both games as San Marcos applied steady pressure at the plate.
Cal State East Bay will conclude its series against Cal State San Marcos on Sunday at Pioneer Field.
