Pioneer Spotlight: Dominick Najar

For Dominick Najar, arriving at Cal State East Bay meant stepping into a completely new environment and embracing everything that came with it. Coming from a small town, the opportunity to compete in the Bay Area while continuing his education marked an important step in his journey.

"I chose East Bay not only to continue my education, but because I always loved the Bay Area growing up," Najar said. "Coming from a small town and having the opportunity to come out here to play baseball and go to school made it an easy decision for me and my family."

Adjusting to college life brought its challenges. Being away from home and joining a team as one of the younger players required him to adapt quickly, both on and off the field.

"Coming to a university straight out of high school was difficult," he said. "Being away from home and being one of the youngest guys on the team was not easy. But that is also what made my journey so meaningful."

Those early experiences helped shape his perspective and allowed him to grow in ways he did not expect.

"I was able to build new connections and create friendships that will last a lifetime," Najar said. "Looking back at everything I have been through, I would not change a single part of my journey."

Each day in the program is something he values deeply.

"What inspires me most is being blessed enough to wake up every morning and play the game I have spent my whole life working for," he said. "Spending each day with my teammates and coaches, people I see as family, means everything to me."

That mindset is rooted in the support he has received from those closest to him.

"My family inspires me the most," Najar said. "My mom, dad, and little brother have always done whatever it takes, and more, to help me become who I am and get to where I am today. I will forever be thankful to have them in my corner."

Faith also plays a central role in his journey.

"Jesus Christ has been the most influential in my life," he said. "I am not perfect, but He has always had my back. He is the one I turn to whenever I feel lost or worried, and I believe He will always guide me down the right path."

Looking ahead, Najar has a clear plan for life after baseball. While he hopes to continue playing for as long as possible, he is also preparing for a future in service.

"My goal is to play baseball for as long as I can," he said. "Once that chapter comes to an end, I plan to enlist in the Air Force after I graduate. Entering the military with a degree will set me up for success and give me more opportunities."

He is also passionate about supporting fellow student-athletes beyond the game.

"I am passionate about mental health and support for student-athletes," Najar said. "People see the game, but they do not always see the pressure, sacrifices, and challenges that come with it. Having strong support systems on and off the field is important."

As the season continues, his focus remains on team success.

"This year, we are working toward becoming CCAA Champions," he said. "Winning is always the goal, and with the group we have, I truly believe we are going to show everyone who the Pios are."

Away from baseball, Najar has another side that often surprises people.

"One thing people might not expect is that I'm a 200-average bowler," he said.

As his journey continues, Najar remains focused on making the most of each opportunity both on and off the field. With clear goals ahead and a strong sense of direction, he continues to move forward with confidence in where his path will take him.
