Pioneers Impress at West Coast Relays

The Cal State East Bay women's track and field team turned in a well-rounded performance at the 2026 West Coast Relays in Clovis, highlighted by a top-three finish in the distance events, strong middle-distance depth, and standout marks in the field.
 
East Bay's distance group was led by Jacklyn Velasquez, who delivered one of the team's top performances of the meet with a third-place finish in the 5000 meters, crossing in 21:27.64.
In the 1500 meters, Angelique Martinez paced the Pioneers with a 16th-place finish in 4:42.97, while Madison Gomez followed in 21st (4:46.50). Yamilet Deniz added another solid performance at 4:49.00, with additional contributions from Grace Veloza (5:03.50), Gaby Sanchez (5:17.50), and Maria Matos (5:33.82).
 
The Pioneers also showed depth in the 800 meters, placing four runners in a tight pack. Genevieve Tamondong (2:19.43) and Madison Gomez (2:19.45) led the way, finishing 18th and 19th, respectively. Yamilet Deniz followed in 2:20.62, while Rachael Simpson posted a 2:24.24.
In the 400 meters, Jenna Rodriguez recorded a strong sixth-place finish with a time of 56.92, while Nelly Isidro added a 1:01.22 performance.
 
East Bay's sprint group was led by Jada Dorsett, who ran 13.02 in the 100 meters and 27.28 in the 200 meters. Teammate Tamia Owens posted times of 13.06 in the 100 and 29.56 in the 200, adding depth in both events.
 
The Pioneers also competed in the 4x400-meter relay, where the quartet of Rachael Simpson, Genevieve Tamondong, Nelly Isidro, and Jenna Rodriguez combined for a time of 3:59.47, finishing seventh overall.
 
East Bay saw several strong performances in the field events, led by Savannah Garcia, who placed fourth in the javelin with a mark of 38.37 meters (125'11"). Catlin Alexis followed closely, finishing fifth at 36.48 meters (119'8"), while also contributing in the jumps.
 
In the horizontal jumps, Julia Carmona delivered another standout performance, placing fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 11.70 meters (38'4¾"). Carmona also finished 10th in the long jump at 5.43 meters (17'9¾"), while Catlin Alexis added a 13th-place finish (5.17m / 16'11½").
 
In the throws, Jimena Ortiz-Guardado recorded a mark of 36.01 meters (118'2") in the hammer throw.
