Pioneers' Comeback Attempt Falls Short on Friday

HAYWARD, Calif. - A four-game CCAA series for Cal State East Bay baseball against No. 30-t Cal State San Bernardino opened Friday at Pioneer Baseball Field. The Pioneers fell behind, and battled their way from a seven-run deficit only to come up short, falling 8-6.

 GAME SUMMARY

With one out in the bottom of the second, Gio Martini singled, then would steal second base. With Martini in scoring position, Aidan Morton doubled to drive in the first run of the game and a 1-0 lead for East Bay. 

The Coyotes put together four runs in the top of the fourth, topped off by a two-RBI double from Daryl Ruiz. 

CSUSB added to its lead in top of the sixth on an RBI single from Jacob Mejia and after a double hit by Dom Dominguez two more runs came to the plate for a 7-1 lead. 

Matt Gonzales led off the seventh with a solo home run to lead 8-1. 

In the bottom of the seventh, the Pioneers began a comeback effort. A leadoff walk to Morton, followed by a single from Jalen Hodges set up Quinn Ayres with a runner at third base. And Ayres hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Morton. After Morton scored, Nick Thomson hit a two-run home run cutting the deficit to four runs. 

The Pioneers got one more run in the bottom of the eighth off a sacrifice fly RBI hit by Hodges. 

In the bottom of the ninth, East Bay had one last chance to complete a comeback. Dominic Najar singled, advanced to second on a groundout and stole third base. Luke Brown then singled up the middle as Najar scored with East bay behind 8-6. However, the Coyotes got the final out ending the comeback hope and won 8-6 in the series opener.

  • Thomson's home run was his first as a Pioneer.
  • Martini, Morton and Thomson had two hits each. 
  • Hodges, Martini, Najar and Jacob Klinovsky are currently on a five-game hitting streak. 
  • With two stolen bases, Najar has 11on the season, which is second most in the CCAA through Friday. 
  • Gabe Tanner had three strikeouts in 5.0 innings pitched and allowed two earned runs. He has 43 strikeouts, second most in the CCAA.

The Pioneers and Coyotes continue their series on Saturday at Pioneer Baseball Field with a CCAA doubleheader. Game one is scheduled for noon with the second game set for 3 p.m.
