Pioneer Baseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader vs. CSUSB

HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay baseball hosted a CCAA doubleheader on Saturday at Pioneer Baseball Field, splitting the pair of games against No. 30-t Cal State San Bernardino. The Pioneers lost game one, 5-4, but in seven innings for game two, shut out the Coyotes, 3-0.

GAME SUMMARIES

Game One: CSUSB 8, Cal State East Bay 5
The Coyotes took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning, but in the bottom of the fourth, East Bay tied the game at 1-1 on a sacrifice fly RBI from Carson Cripe as Gio Martini scored the tying run. 

CSUSB broke the tie in the top of the fifth on a two-run home run from Jeremy Giesegh and added one more run in the inning when an error allowed Wyatt Hall to come to the plate for a 4-1 lead. 

Dominick Najar scored following a wild pitch and rundown attempt to get another runner out in the bottom of the fifth. 

East Bay scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Jaylen Hodges hit an RBI single with the bases loaded and Nick Thomson hit a sacrifice fly RBI to drive in Martini for the tying run at 4-4. 

However, the Coyotes took the lead back in the top of the seventh on a solo home run off the bat of Daryl Ruiz. 

Although the Pioneers got the tying run on base two more times in the game, they could not capitalize as CSUSB took game one of the doubleheader, 5-4. 
 
Game Two: Cal State East Bay 3, CSUSB 0 (7 innings)
With Aidan Morton on second base in the bottom of the second, Hodges delivered an RBI single for a 1-0 lead. 

The lead grew to 2-0 in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double from Morton to drive in Martini. Then, Hodges hit an RBI single as Morton beat the throw to the plate for a 3-0 lead.

The Pioneers kept the shutout intact in the top of the seventh for a 3-0 win to split the doubleheader. 

Max Gonzales was outstanding on the mound with a complete game two-hit shutout to improve to 4-1 on the season.

NOTABLE STATS
  • Gonzales had five strikeouts in the game two shutout. He surrendered one hit in the first inning, then retired 18 consecutive batters into the top of the seventh inning. 
  • Morton had four hits on the day, including three doubles in game two. His .419 batting average is the highest among all Pioneer batters. 
  • Martini scored three runs on the day.
