HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay baseball swept a CCAA doubleheader with Cal State San Marcos on Thursday at Pioneer Baseball Field. The Pioneers won game one 16-4 and game two, 7-3.
Game One – Cal State East Bay 16, Cal State San Marcos 4
The Pioneers would get on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first inning on a
Matthew O'Mahony RBI single to left field that scored
Luke Brown.
The Pioneers added two more runs in the bottom of the second inning – one on a
Jaylen Hodges RBI single through the left side that scored
Quinn Ayres and one on a
Brenden Bell solo home run to left center for a 3-0 lead.
Although the Cougars would score a run in the top of the third inning, the Pioneers' offense exploded for four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Luke Novitske hit a sacrifice fly RBI,
Alonzo Guijarro hit a two run double and
Danelle Daniels singled up the middle for an RBI toward a 7-1 lead.
The Cougars scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning, but O'Mahony launched a three run home run to left field for a 10-3 lead.
In the seventh inning, O'Mahony struck again with a two-RBI single, which started a five-run rally. Also in the inning, Ayres and Hodges hit RBI singles, and Bell was a hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for a 15-3 lead.
CSUSM scored a run in the top of the eighth inning, but in the bottom of the eighth inning,
Danelle Daniels hit an RBI double for a 16-4 lead, which ultimately became the final score of game one.
- Gabe Tanner picked up the win to improve to 6-2 on the season with 7.0 innings pitched, allowing three runs and striking out seven.
- O'Mahony led the Pioneers' offense going 3-for-5 with six RBIs and two runs scored.
- Daniels also had three hits.
Game Two – Cal State East Bay 7, Cal State San Marcos 3
The Cougars took an early 2-0 lead in top of the second inning.
The Pioneers would score a run in the bottom of the fourth inning on a Daniels RBI double to left center that scored
Alonzo Guijarro.
Garrett Teunissen homored in the top of the fifth for a 3-1 lead for CSUSM, but in the bottom of the fifth inning, Novitske hit an RBI single.
Niko Mollat singled through the right side in the bottom of the sixth to drive in the tying run. Following Mollat's RBI single, Hodges hit an RBI single to put the Pioneers ahead, then Bell hit an RBI single for a 5-3 lead.
Mollat hit a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh for a 7-3 lead. The Pioneers did not allow any more runs in the game and went on to a 7-3 win to sweep Thursday's doubleheader.
- In relief, Dwyer Lewis pitched 4.1 innings for the win to improve to 3-3 and had four strikeouts.
- Mollat led the Pioneers' offense going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and one run scored.
