TURLOCK, Calif. – Cal State East Bay baseball trailed by as much as eight runs, 9-1, in a CCAA series finale against Stanislaus State on Sunday. However, the Pioneers put together a comeback that included a 9-1 score through the eighth and ninth inning. However, despite the comeback that forced extra innings with a 10-10 score, the Warriors won in 11 innings, 11-10 to take three of four games in the series with CSUEB.
The Warriors took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. The Pioneers would get a run back in the top of the third inning on a
Luke Novitske RBI ground out that drove in
Brenden Bell.
Ahead 3-1, Stanislaus State tacked on six runs in the top of the seventh inning for a 9-1 lead.
The Pioneers countered with six runs of their own in the top of the eighth inning.
Danelle Daniels,
Matthew O'Mahony and
Matthew Mandeville were the first three batters in the inning, and reached base to load the bases.
Niko Mollat hit into a fielder's choice for an RBI to start the string of six runs.
Jacob Froess followed with an RBI single, as the Pioneers trailed 9-3. After Froess's RBI single,
Jaylen Hodges reached on a single to load the bases. With the bases loaded, the Pioneers capitalized as Bell launched a grand slam as CSUEB trailed 9-7 in the middle of the eighth inning.
The Warriors added one run in the bottom of the eighth inning for a 10-7 lead.
With one out in the top of the ninth, Mollat drew bases loaded walk that scored
Quinn Ayres. Two batters later, with the Pioneers down to their last out,
Jacob Klinovsky entered as a pinch hitter, and came through with a two-run single, that drove in Daniels and Mandeville to tie the game at 10-10.
In the bottom of the ninth,
Ryan Juric entered the game for CSUEB and retired the side to force extra innings.
The Pioneers had a runner in scoring position in the 10th inning but did not score and were retired in the top of the 11th. In the bottom of the 11th, JD Madrigal led off with a single for the Warriors, and reached second base on a sacrifice bunt. Later in the inning, Madrigal scored the winning run on a walk-off RBI single by Mac Cabero as Stanislaus State took the series finale in 11 innings, 11-10.
- Bell went 2-fo-4 with four RBIs. His hits included a triple and a home run.
- Froess and O'Mahony also had two hits each.
- In 6.0 innings on the mound, Derek Murphy had five strikeouts in a no-decision.
