HAYWARD, Calif. - After a 4-2 trip to Hawaii for Cal State East Bay baseball, the 2024 home opener for the Pioneers took place Friday afternoon. In the first two innings, Cal State East Bay combined for eight runs against Menlo College. Despite the Oaks' seven unanswered runs to follow, the Pioneers closed out the game with an 8-7 victory on Friday.
In the bottom of the first, the Pioneers jumped out quickly to a lead. After
Niko Mollat walked and
Luke Novitske singled,
Jacob Klinovsky delivered an RBI single up the middle to drive in Mollat for a 1-0 lead. Back-to-back hit-by-pitches drawn by
Luke Brown and
Matthew O'Mahony led to Novitske scoring, then a wild pitch allowed Klinovsky to score for a 3-0 lead. With Brown and O'Mahony in scoring position,
Sam Gilliam delivered a two-run single, driving them in for a 5-0 lead. The final run of the inning was cored by Gilliam after an RBI single from
Danelle Daniels, as the Pioneers led 6-0.
The lead grew to 8-0 in the bottom of the second inning on an two-run double by
Brenden Bell, driving in Brown and Gilliam.
Menlo got three runs back on a bases clearing triple in the top of the fourth inning from Sean Pettene in the fourth and two more in the top of the sixth on a two-run home run by Jaden Fulshe.
With the Pioneers ahead 8-5 in the top of the ninth inning with two outs and two runners on base, Menlo was able to come within a run an a two RBI single from Sage Pera. Although the Oaks had the tying and go-ahead run on base,
Drake Richardson was able to close out the game for the save, as CSUEB won 8-7.
- Novitske and Klinovsky each went 2-for-5 on the day, scoring a run each.
- On the mound for the Pioneers, Gabe Tanner improved to 2-0 on the season with 5.0 innings pitched with six strikeouts and three runs allowed.
- Richardson's save was his second of the season.
