O'Mahony Hits Three Home Runs on Sunday as Pioneers Split Pair of Games

WAIPAHU, Hawaii – On Sunday, Cal State East Bay played two games to wrap up the 2024 Oahu Baseball Classic. The Pioneers won the first game of the day against Chaminade, 8-5, but dropped the later game to Hawai'i Pacific, 13-4. Matthew O;Mahony had three home runs on Sunday through both games.  After the opening weekend, the Pioneers are 4-2.

GAME SUMMARIES

Game One – Cal State East Bay 8, Chaminade 5
Luke Novitske and Luke Brown delivered RBI hits in the top of the first inning, but gave up the next three runs to the Silverswords, as the Pioneers trailed 3-2 after three innings.

In the bottom of the fourth, Matthew O'Mahony launched a solo home run to tie the game at 3-3.
 
After Chaminade took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth, O'Mahony hit another home run, though it would be a two-run shot, as the Pioneers led 5-4.
 
Chaminade tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh, but in the top of the eighth, Danelle Daniels drove in a pair of runs to break the tie with a triple, then Jaylen Hodges drove in Daniels with an RBI groundout for an 8-5 lead.
 
Drake Richardson, in relief, closed out the game, retiring six of seven batters faced in two innings of work for the save. 
  • Brown and O'Mahony had three hits each.
  • The winning pitcher was Caleb Schaeffer, going to 1-0 on the season.
Game Two - Hawai'i Pacific 13, Cal State East Bay 4
In the bottom of the first, a leadoff error led to the Sharks jumping out to a 5-0 lead with all runs unearned.

The Pioneers got on the scoreboard in the top of the second on an RBI triple from Jacob Froess, as CSUEB trailed 5-1.

Although a home run for HPU added to the lead, a leadoff double by Brown, followed by O'Mahony's third home run of the day, brought the Pioneers within two runs in the top of the fourth, trailing 6-3. Brown hit a sacrifice fly RBI in the top of the sixth, to drive in Daniels, as the Pioneers were within two runs.

However, HPU answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, and four more in the bottom of the seventh, while holding the Pioneers scoreless for the final four innings, as the Sharks won 13-4.
  • With three home runs in total on Sunday, O'Mahony has nine for his career.
  • Daniels went 3-for-5 in game two and scored a run.

UP NEXT FOR CAL STATE EAST BAY

The Pioneers' home opener takes place Friday, February 9 when they host Menlo College. First pitch from Pioneer Baseball Field is set for 2 p.m. It will be the opener of a three game series against the Oaks with Cal State East Bay hosting on February 9 and 11 and Menlo hosting the middle game on February 10.
