Pioneer Baseball Splits Friday's Doubleheader to Simpson

HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay baseball played a home doubleheader on Friday at Pioneer Baseball Field. The Pioneers won the series opener to Simpson (Calif.), 5-1, but in 10 innings of a game originally scheduled for seven innings, the Pioneers lost 4-3.

GAME SUMMARIES

Cal State East Bay 5, Simpson 1
After five scoreless innings, the Red Hawks got on the scoreboard first in the top of the sixth inning on a sacrifice bunt by Titus Sato that drove in Dominic Folk. The Pioneers took the lead in bottom of the sixth inning with three runs – one coming on a Luke Novitske RBI single to left field that scored Matthew Olivares and two more on a two-run home run to right field by Sam Gilliam. The Pioneers added a run in the bottom of the seventh on a Brenden Bell RBI single to left field that dove in Jacob Klinovsky. The Pioneers wrapped up their scoring in the bottom of the eighth inning when Luke Brown scored on a throwing error.
  • Gabe Tanner improved to 3-0 on the season with 7.0 innings on the mound with no earned runs allowed and five strikeouts. 
  • Novitske and Matthew O'Mahony had two hits each in game one
Simpson (Calif.) 4, Cal State East Bay 3 (10 innings)
The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Jaylen Hodges scored on a wild pitch. The Pioneers added a run in the bottom of the third inning on an O'Mahony RBI single to right field that scored Niko Mollat. The Pioneers led 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning when Hodges hit an RBI single up the middle that scored Bell. The Red Hawks scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game at 3-3. With a scoreless seventh inning, extra innings were played. The Pioneers got runners into scoring position in both the eighth and the ninth innings, but were unable to capitalize. In the top of the tenth, the Red Hawks scored a run that resulted from an error and with a scoreless bottom of the 10th, won 4-3.
  • O'Mahony was 5-for-5 with one RBI to lead the Pioneers offensively in the second game. He has a hit in every game he has played in this season and through Saturday, is batting .548.

UP NEXT FOR CAL STATE EAST BAY

The series finale against the Red Hawks takes place Saturday, but has been relocated and rescheduled. The game will take place at Chabot College Baseball Field, and first pitch is set for 10 a.m. The changes are in anticipation of inclement weather.
