HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay baseball played the second day of their CCAA series against Stanislaus State at Pioneer Baseball Field on Friday. The Warriors won game one 5-4 and the Pioneers won 3-2, in eight innings, in game two.
Also on Friday, with the results in Hayward and elsewhere in the CCAA, the Pioneers clinched a spot in next week's 2023 CCAA Tournament.
Game #1 – Stanislaus State 5, Cal State East Bay 4
The Warriors opened the scoring in the top of the third inning with a pair of runs to go ahead 2-0, then added three more runs in the top of the third inning to lead 5-0. Singles in the first four innings by Alex Solis, Robert Valdivia and Flavio Perez combined for five RBIs during the stretch.
The Pioneers countered in the bottom of the fourth inning with three runs of their own – one on a
Manny Garcia RBI double to left center that scored
Matthew O'Mahony, Garcia scored on an RBI fielder's choice by
Niko Mollat and
Jacob Froess hit a sacrifice fly RBI to drive in
Cole Anderson as CSUEB trailed 5-3.
O'Mahony hit an RBI sacrifice fly to center field that drove in
Essex Brown Jr. as the Pioneers trailed 5-4 after five innings.
The Pioneers put runners into scoring position in the sixth, seventh and ninth innings but they could not plate the runner as the Warriors won game one, 5-4.
Game #2 – CSU East Bay 3, Stanislaus State 2 (8 innings)
The Warriors opened the scoring with one run in the top of the second inning and went ahead 2-0 in the top of the fifth inning
Anderson hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit to 2-1. After the home run, Mollat reached base on a hit-by-pitch, then advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Froess delivered an RBI single to bring home Mollat to even the game at 2-2.
The final two scheduled innings were scoreless as extra innings were needed to determine a winner. Garcia led off the bottom of the eighth by reaching on a hit-by-pitch, then advanced a base on a single from
Luke Novitske. After the single, on a fielder's choice in an attempt to put Novitske out at second base, a throwing error allowed Garcia to score the winning run for a 3-2 walk-off victory.
The win went to
Drake Richardson for the Pioneers. It was his second of the season.
- Froess went 3-for-5 on the day with two RBIs.
- Novitske went 4-for-7 on the day and is currently on a nine-game hitting streak. He had a pair of doubles in game one.
- Ethan Brodsky pitched 5.0 innings for a no-decision in game two with three strikeouts. He leads the conference in strikeouts with 89 on the season, which is also tied for most in one season in Pioneer history.
- The Pioneers have qualified for the CCAA Tournament for the first time since 2016.
