EUREKA, Mo. - Medal Match Play at the 2023 NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championships began Friday morning at Fox Run Golf Course. The Cal State East Bay women's golf team lost its match to top-seeded Dallas Baptist, 2-1-2.
The one individual victory for the Pioneers was from Dristhi Karumbaya, who defeated Olivia Mitchell of DBU, 75-77.
Arrianna Custodio and
Julika Grosspietsch tied their respective matches with scores of 76 and 75 respectively.
DBU won two matches, and ultimately won the team match to advance to the semifinals of medal match play.
The 2022-23 season was historical for the Pioneers, who reached the NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championships for the first time as a team and in addition, advanced to match play which only the top eight scoring teams in stroke play qualify for.
"It was a bittersweet day," stated Cal State East Bay head coach
Alan Sue. "We played well enough to beat maybe the best team in the nation but fell just short. I'm just so proud of this group. This performance has put us on the map for women's golf. Our challenge now becomes to try to keep this level of performance in the future. I'll miss our seniors so much and I am looking forward to our new core leading the team next season."
The 2022-23 regular season had the Pioneers finish as No. 16 in the Golfstat rankings for NCAA Division II, and in the most recent Division II Mizuno WGCA Coaches Poll, the Pioneers were ranked No. 17.
