Alan Sue


Alan Sue was named head coach of the Pioneer men's and women's golf programs in 2005. 

Following the 2024-25 regular season, Sue was named CCAA Men's Golf Coach of the Year and Golf Pride Grips Division II West Region Men's Golf Coach of the Year. 

He led the Cal State East Bay men's golf team to its second CCAA Championship in 2025 to automatically qualify for the NCAA Division II West/South Central Regional. In the same year, the women's golf program at CSUEB placed third at the CCAA Championships and was awarded a fourth straight team berth in the NCAA Division II West Regional. Subsequently, both Pioneer golf teams followed with performances to earn spots in their respective NCAA Division II Golf Championships. 

His teams have won many tournament and individual championships at the NCAA Division II level, and Sue has coached four All-Americans, three Scholar All-Americans, and three recipients of the CCAA's Dr. Hal Charnofsky Award. 

The 2023-24 season saw both golf teams reach their respective NCAA Division II Regional tournaments. For Women's Golf, the program reached the NCAA Division II National Championships for a second straight season after tying for third at the NCAA Division II South Central/West Regional. Multiple postseason honors among both teams that season, most notably in men's golf, CCAA Freshman of the Year, Adam Brangefalt, and in women's golf, Julika Grosspietsch for All-CCAA First Team.  

In 2022-23, Sue led CSUEB women's golf to its first ever team appearance in the NCAA Division II Championships. In the championship tournament, the Pioneers advanced to match play after finishing eighth in stroke play. From the Pioneer team, Drishti Karumbaya was named to the WGCA All-American Second Team and Julika Grosspitesch was named WGCA All-America Honorable Mention. From the same team, Jasmin Krishna was named Academic All-America® Third Team. 

Also in 2022-23, two individual men's golfers, Xavier Coreno and Easton Hether, qualified for the NCAA Division II West/South Central Regional. On the way, Hether was named CCAA Men's Golf Freshman of the Year.   

In 2021-22, both Pioneer golf teams qualified for their respective NCAA Division II Regionals. Among the women's golfers, Drishti Karumbaya reached the NCAA Division II National Championships as an individual qualifier. 

In 2016-17, Sue helmed the Pioneer men's team to its first berth in the NCAA Division II Championships. Behind All-American and CCAA Player of the Year Adam Stone, the 2016-17 squad was runner-up at CCAA Championships and took third place at NCAA Regionals to earn a spot at the national championship tournament, where they finished 12th. 

In 2015-16, Sue guided the men's team to its first ever CCAA title, defeating Stanislaus State and Sonoma State in match play at the CCAA Championships in Napa, Calif. Junior Adam Stone captured the CCAA's individual championships crown, and junior Chad Hall was named CCAA Newcomer of the Year. Sue led the Pioneers to the NCAA Regionals for the fourth time in five years.

In 2014-15, he coached the men's squad to a runner-up finish at the CCAA Championships and fifth place at the NCAA Regionals. Two of Sue's golfers, Adam Stone and A.J. Hebert, claimed All-CCAA and GCAA All-West Region honors. 

In 2013-14, he guided the Pioneer women to their best season ever. They won three tournament championships, boasted six individual medalists, and earned their first trip to the NCAA Division II West Super Regionals. Junior Linda Brown won the program's first-ever Regional Co-Championship. She earned a trip to the NCAA National Championships, where she took 23rd place and was named All-West Region. 

Sue guided the Pioneer men to back-to-back trips to the NCAA West Regional in 2011-12 and 2012-13, led by All-CCAAand All-West Region golfer Chris Herzog. The 2012-13 women's team was crowned champions of the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout, East Bay's home tournament.

In 2008-09, East Bay's final season before moving up to NCAA Division II, one of Sue's individuals qualified for the NAIA National Championships. 

During the 2007-08 season, Sue led the Pioneer men's golf team to their first ever Cal Pac Conference Championship, a second place finish in the NAIA Regionals, and a seventh place showing in the NAIA Championships. Sue was selected as the Cal Pac Conference Coach of the Year. Sue guided the Pioneer women's golf team to a fourth place in the NAIA Region II Championships. The Pioneer women's golf team finished second out of four teams in the Cal State East Bay Invitational.

In his first season as head coach, Sue led the Pioneers to a second place finish in the Cal Pac Conference Tournament and a sixth place showing in the NAIA Region II Championship.

Prior to being named head coach, Sue served as the assistant golf coach at Cal State East Bay for four years and from 1998-2001 served as the assistant coach at Chabot College.

Besides coaching, Sue was also a pro shop assistant at Monarch Bay Golf Club in San Leandro and was a merchandiser for the Oakhurst Country Club in Clayton.

Sue was an exceptional golfer at UC Irvine where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in social science in 1998. He completed his master's in kinesiology with an emphasis in skill acquisition and sport psychology in 2005. Prior to that, Sue won the Northern California Junior College Championship as a freshman at Chabot College.
