HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay baseball continued its CCAA series against No. 7 Cal State San Bernardino at Pioneer Baseball Field on Friday. The Coyotes won game one 5-4 and game two 5-0 for a doubleheader sweep.
Game One - Cal State San Bernardino 5, Cal State East Bay 4
The Coyotes opened the scoring in the top of the first inning with two runs. The Pioneers responded in the bottom of the second with one run on a
Niko Mollat single to center field that drove in
Cole Anderson.
CSUSB would add to its lead in the top of the fourth inning with one run for a 3-1 lead.
The Pioneers' offense would explode for three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Jacob Froess scored on an error,
Luke Brown hit an RBI ground out to second base to frive in Mollat and one on an
Essex Brown Jr. fly ball to right field that scored
Samuel Esparza for a 4-3 lead.
In the top of the eighth, the Coyotes tied the game at 4-4 when AJ Barraza hit an RBI double. CSUSB went ahead 5-4 in the top of the ninth on a Jeremy Giesegh pinch-hit RBI single. Although a runner for the Pioneers reached base in the bottom of the ninth, CSUEB was unable to capitalize as the Coyotes took the first game of the doubleheader, 5-4.
Game Two - Cal State San Bernardino 5, CSU East Bay 0
Danny garcia and Giovanni Del Negro had two RBIs each in game two for CSUSB, and another run was scored on a balk as the Pioneers were shut out, 5-0 in Friday's second game.
- Luke Novitske had a hit in each game, including two in game one.
- Also with a hit in each game was Esparza, who is currently on a five-game hit streak.
- Ethan Brodsky had eight strikeouts in a no-decision in game one and Gabe Tanner had seven strikeouts in game two. Through Friday, each have 57 strikeouts on the season, tied for second most in the CCAA.
