HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay baseball opened a four game CCAA series on Thursday against No. 7 Cal State San Bernardino at Pioneer Baseball Field. The Pioneers and Coyotes would trade runs back and forth throughout the entire game but the Pioneers scored in the bottom of the 11th inning to win 5-4.
The Coyotes opened the scoring in the top of the second inning with a pair of runs runs.
The Pioneers responded in the bottom of the second inning as
Matthew O'Mahony scored on a fielding error.
Cal State East Bay tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third inning on a
Luke Novitske fielder's choice that allowed
Luke Brown to score the tying run.
The Coyotes would score one run in both the top of the fourth and fifth innings and lead 4-2.
In the bottom of the fifth,
Luke Brown scored, from third base on a ground ball double play. Later in the inning, O'Mahony hit his first home run of the season, a solo home run to center field to tie the game at 4-4.
Both teams would then play four innings of scoreless baseball despite multiple opportunities for each team with runners in scoring position.
In the bottom of the 11th inning,
Niko Mollat doubled to left field to open the inning. Then,
Samuel Esparza singled up the middle to drive in Mollat and win the game for the Pioneers, 5-4.
The win went to
James Colyer for the Pioneers, his second of the season.
- O'Mahony went 4-for-5 for his third consecutive multi-hit game.
- O'Mahony's home run was the fifth of his career.
- Facing 11 batters in relief, Colyer struck out five.
- With Thursday's win, the Pioneers have won three in a row.
