SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Cal State East Bay baseball started its final road CCAA series of the 2023 regular season at Cal State San Marcos on Friday afternon. The Cougars came from behind to win 10-8 over the Pioneers.
The Pioneers opened the scoring in the top of the second inning on a
Manny Garcia solo home run to left field, which was the first as a Pioneer.
While CSUSM tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning, CSUEB answered with a pair runs in the top of the third inning – one on a
Luke Brown RBI single to center field that scored
Samuel Esparza and one on a sacrifice fly RBI by
Matthew O'Mahony sto drive in Brown for a 3-1 lead.
The Cougars cut the deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the third inning, but Cal State East Bay scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning.
Luke Novitske singled down the right field to drive in Brown,
Essex Brown Jr. scored on a wild pitch and Garcia hit an RBI single to right field that drove in Novitske for a 6-2 lead.
Although the Cougars scored a run in the bottom of the fifth, RBI hits from Brown Jr. and Novitske built an 8-3 lead for Cal State East Bay.
The Cougars would then score five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to even the game at 8-8. In the bottom of the eighth, CSUSM took a 10-8 lead with a pair of runs. The Pioneers did not score in the top of the ninth, as Cal State San Marcos took the series opener, 10-8.
- Garcia finished the day going 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
- Luke Brown had three RBIs on Friday.
- O'Mahony extended his hitting streak to 11 games after one hit on Friday.
