Pioneers Cruise Past Gators, 11-1 on Tuesday

SAN FRANCISCO – Cal State East Bay baseball finished their CCAA series in 2023 against San Francisco State on Tuesday afternoon with a make up game at Maloney Field. The Pioneers broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning, and scored 10 unanswered runs to cruise to an 11-1 victory.

GAME SUMMARY
 
The Pioneers opened the scoring in the top of the third inning, Niko Mollat led off the inning with a single, then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, then reached third base on a single from Luke Brown. Essex Brown Jr. hit an RBI fielders' choice to get CSUEB on the board with Mollat scoring the first run of the day. 

Although the Gators evened the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth, the Pioneers broke the tie in the top of the fifth inning with two runs which were scored on a Luke Novitske double to left center to drive in Brown Jr. and Samuel Esparza.

In the top of the eighth inning, the Pioneers' offense exploded for six runs.  Esparza bunted for a single to drive in Jacob Froess, Brown Jr. hit an RBI single, Novitske had two more RBIs on his single in the inning, Matthew O'Mahony hit an RBI single and Cole Anderson hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Novitske as CSUEB led 9-1. 

Novitske delivered two more RBIs in the top of the ninth on his second double of the day, driving in Luke Brown and Esparza. 

James Colyer entered the game in the bottom of the ninth and struck out the side to seal an 11-1 win for the Pioneers. 

The win went to Max Gonzales, improving to 4-0 with 5.2 innings on the mound with four strikeouts.

NOTABLE STATS
  • With Cal State East Bay's win on Tuesday, the Pioneers sit in a fourth place tie with the Gators and are three games up on the seventh place team, Cal State Dominguez Hills. 
  • Gonzales picked up his fourth win in as many consecutive appearances. 
  • Novitske finished with a career-high six RBIs after going 3-for-6 with two doubles. 
  • Of the 11 runs scored by CSUEB, three were scored by Esparza. 
  • Mollat had a career-high four hits. 
  • O'Mahony is currently on a 10-game hit streak.
