CARSON, Calif. – Cal State East Bay baseball played in the second day of a CCAA road series against Cal State Dominguez Hills. With a combined 34 runs, the Pioneers swept the doubleheader, winning game one 18-13 and game two 16-4.
Game One – Cal State East Bay 18, CSU Dominguez Hills 13
Each team scored four runs in the first inning with the Pioneers' runs would come s a result of RBI hits from
Matthew O'Mahony,
Cole Anderson and
Quinn Ayres.
In the top of the second inning,
Manny Garcia hit an RBI single to drive in
Luke Novitske, giving CSUEB a 5-4 lead.
With the bases loaded in the top of the fourth,
Niko Mollat was hit by a pitch for a RBI, extending the Pioneers' lead to 6-4.
In the top of the sixth inning, the Pioneers scored four runs. Mollat hit an RBI single to center field that scored Garcia,
Samuel Esparza tripled to right center to drive in Anderson and Mollat and Esparza scored on an RBI groundout by
Luke Brown.
Although CSUDH scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth, the Pioneers answered with two runs of their own in the top of the seventh. O'Mahony single up the middle for his third RBI of the game and Anderson hit a sacrifice fly to center field, as Garcia scored for a 12-7 lead.
CSUEB scored one run in the top of the eighth, but the Toros came within three runs in the bottom of the eighth with a pair of runs to trail 13-10.
Luke Brown launched his first home run with the Pioneers, and it was a grand slam in the top of the ninth, giving a 17-10 lead for CSUEB.
Later in the inning, Novitske hit an RBI double as
Essex Brown Jr. scored to extend the lead to 18-10.
The Toros would add three runs I n the bottom of the ninth on a three-run home run by Vincent Temesvary, but Cal State East Bay finished game one with an 18-13 victory.
The win went to
Max Gonzales for the Pioneers, which was his second of the season.
Game Two – Cal State East Bay 16, CSU Dominguez Hills 4 (7 innings)
The Pioneers opened the game with three runs – one on a throwing error that scored Brown Jr. and one on an Anderson double to right center for two RBIs as Garcia and O'Mahony scored.
Although the Toros got one run in the bottom of the second inning, the Pioneers would score 13 runs between the third and the fifth innings. Six of the 13 runs were batted in by doubles.
CSUDH got three more runs in the game, but it was not nearly enough as Cal State East Bay cruised to a 16-4 win in seven innings.
Picking up his fifth win of the season was
Ethan Brodsky, who had eight strikeouts in just five innings on the mound.
- In game one, all batters who were in the starting lineup for Cal State East Bay got at least one hit. Brown Jr., O'Mahony and Garcia each had four hits in game one.
- Luke Brown And Anderson had seven RBIs each throughout the day.
- In all three games of the series, Brown Jr. has two stolen bases in each game
