CARSON, Calif. – Cal State East Bay baseball opened up a CCAA series against CSU Dominguez Hills on Friday afternoon at Toro Field. Trailing 6-0, the Pioneers scored nine unanswered runs in the final four innings to complete a comeback for a 9-6 win.
The Toros scored a pair of runs in the first inning, added one more in the third and two runs and doubled their lead in the bottom of the fifth with three more to be ahead 6-0 through five innings.
Trailing by six runs, the Pioneers' offense exploded for five runs in the top of the sixth inning including two runs coming on an
Essex Brown Jr. double to left field that scored
Luke Brown and
Samuel Esparza, one more on a
Matthew O'Mahony RBI single to left field driving in Brown Jr and one on an RBI single to right field by
Quinn Ayres that drove in
Manny Garcia.
In the top of the eighth inning, Garcia doubled down the right field line to drive in O'Mahony to tie the game at 6-6.
Garcia scored the go-ahead run in the same inning when Ayres hit an RBI single to right field, putting CSUEB ahead 7-6.
The Pioneers would add their final tallies in the top of the ninth inning with two runs – one on a Novitske RBI single to right field and one on a
Cole Anderson sacrifice fly RBI that allowed Brown Jr. to score the ninth run of the day for CSUEB.
The Toros would get a runner into scoring position in the bottom of the ninth, as well as have the tying run at bat, but
James Colyer completed his fourth save of the season by closing out the game completing a 9-6 comeback win for the Pioneers.
Derek Murphy was credited with the win for the Pioneers as a relief pitcher and Colyer picked up the save.
