HAYWARD, Calif. – In a rearranged four-game series between Cal State East Bay baseball and No. 15 Cal Poly Pomona, the Pioneers won both of their games on Friday at Pioneer Baseball Field. On Saturday though, the Broncos took both games to sweep the doubleheader and split the series.
Saturday's games were played at Chabot College.
Game One (Friday) – Cal State East Bay 4, Cal Poly Pomona 3
The Pioneers opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when
Cole Anderson drew a bases- loaded walk to drive in
Essex Brown Jr.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Broncos scored a pair of runs to take a 2-1 lead and added on another run in the top of the seventh inning for a 3-1 lead.
The Pioneers' offense would catch fire in the bottom of the eighth as they scored three runs –
Luke Brown and
Luke Novitske scored as a result of an error to tie the game at 3-3. Later in the inning CSUEB took a 4-3 lead on an RBI single from
Jacob Klinovsky to drive in
Matthew O'Mahony for a 4-3 lead.
To close out the game,
James Colyer faced four batters in the top of the ninth, striking out three and earning the save in the 4-3 victory.
The win went to
Ethan Brodsky for the Pioneers, who pitched eight innings allowing no earned runs and striking out seven.
Game Two (Friday) – CSU East Bay 7, Cal Poly Pomona 4
The Broncos got on the scoreboard first in the top of the third inning.
In the bottom of the third,
Luke Brown tripled as
Manny Garcia and Brown Jr. scored to give the Pioneers a 2-1 lead.
Cole Anderson hit his first home run of the season in the top of the fourth, and Brown Jr. hit an RBI single to right field as Cal State East Bay led 4-1.
The lead grew to 5-1 on an RBI single from Anderson, and became 6-1 in the bottom of the seventh when Novitske scored a run from a throwing error.
The Broncos scored a run in the top of the eighth, but in the bottom of the eighth, Garcia hit an RBI double to drive in Brown Jr. for a 7-2 lead.
Although CPP scored a pair of runs in the top of the ninth, the Pioneers came away with a 7-4 win for the doubleheader sweep.
Garrison Finck picked up his first win of the season for the Pioneers with five innings on the mound allowing one run and striking out three.
Game One (Saturday) – Cal Poly Pomona 5, Cal State East Bay 0
The Broncos opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the fifth inning and added one run in the top of the seventh and another in the ninth inning for the only runs of the game.
Cole Anderson led the Pioneers' offense going 1-3 in Saturday's first game.
Game 2 – Cal Poly Pomona 15, Cal State East Bay 2
The Broncos' offense exploded for seven runs in the top of the second and six runs in the top of the fifth. Six of the first 13 runs for the Broncos were from two home runs by Tyler Chaffee.
Cal Poly Pomona took a no-hitter into the bottom of the seventh, up 15-0.
Luke Brown broke up the bid in the inning with a leadoff double. The only two runs for the Pioneers on Saturday were from a two-run home run hit by Anderson.
- Anderson finished the series going 4-for-12 with two home runs and four RBIs.
- Luke Brown went 4-for-13 in the series with two RBIs and currently has a .333 batting average.

Cal Poly Pomona: 10-3, 2-2 CCAA
