SANTA ROSA, Calif. – Cal State East Bay baseball opened a CCAA series against Sonoma State at Santa Rosa Junior College on Saturday after a rain delay also pushed a venue change. The Pioneers defeated the Seawolves 6-2 to open the series.
The Pioneers scored two runs in the top of the first – one on a
Luke Novitske RBI grounder to the shortstop that scored
Manny Garcia and one on a
Matthew O'Mahony double to left center that drove in
Luke Brown.
O'Mahony hit an RBI single up the middle that scored Brown in the top of the third inning for a 3-0 lead.
The Pioneers added a run in the top of the sixth inning on a
Samuel Esparza RBI single to shortstop that drove in
Cole Anderson for a 4-0 lead.
The Seawolves added runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings to trim the Pioneers' lead to 4-2.
The Pioneers would add their final runs of the game in the bottom of the eighth on a double to right center by Esparza, driving in
Robert Ellwanger and
Jacob Froess for a 6-2 lead, which eventually was the final score.
The win went to
Ethan Brodsky, his third of the season, as he has a 2.93 ERA in 30.2 innings on the mound.
James Colyer picked up his second save of the season.
- Brodsky pitched six innings allowing one run and striking out six batters faced.
- In just 2.1 innings of relief work, Colyer struck out seven.
- O'Mahony went 3-for-5 with two RBIs.
- Esparza went 3-for-4 with three RBIs.

Sonoma State: 6-2, 0-1 CCAA
The Pioneers will play a doubleheader tomorrow against the Seawolves. Weather permitting, first pitch of game one will take place at 10:30 am. from Santa Rosa JC Baseball Field. Game two is scheduled to follow game one.
