HAYWARD, Calif. – After dropping Friday's series opener against Cal State Monterey Bay, the Cal State East Bay baseball team dropped its next three games of the series to be swept by the Otters. On Saturday, the Pioneers lost the first game of a doubleheader, 9-4, followed by a second game loss, 7-1 in seven innings. To wrap up the series, CSUMB won 4-1 on Sunday from Pioneer Baseball Field.
CSUMB 9, Cal State East Bay 4 (Saturday)
After the Pioneers fell behind 4-0 in the top of the first inning, they scored one back in the bottom of the first when
Matthew O'Mahony hit an RBI single that drove in
Niko Mollat.
The Otters scored the next five runs and led 9-1 in the sixth inning.
Manny Garcia hit an RBI groundout to drive in a run in the bottom of the sixth,
Essex Brown Jr. hit an RBI single in the seventh and
Connor McWard hit a sacrifice fly RBI in the eighth, accounting for a run in each inning for CSUEB.
The Pioneers did not manage to score again in the game and CSUMB won 9-4.
CSUMB 7, Cal State East Bay 1 (7 innings – Saturday)
By the middle of the fifth inning, the Otters led 7-0.
Austin Alvarez scored the only run of the game for the Pioneers on an RBI groundout by
Samuel Esparza.
Cal State Monterey won 7-1 in seven scheduled innings.
CSUMB 4, Cal State East Bay 1 (Sunday)
The Otters scored first in the top of the fifth inning with one run and added three more in the eighth inning for a 4-0 lead.
In the ninth inning, the Pioneers loaded the bases.
Jacob Klinovsky drew a walk that scored
O'Mahony. However, with the tying run on base, the Pioneers didn't capitalize, and CSUMB finished with a 4-1 win to sweep the series.
- O'Mahony went 2-for-3 in the series finale.
- Luke Novitske went 4-for-15 in the series.
- In game two on Saturday, Gabe Tanner had six strikeouts in 5.0 innings on the mound.
