CHICO, Calif. – Cal State East Bay baseball took on Chico State for a road series at Nettleton Stadium that opened Friday and concluded Sunday. The Pioneers won Friday's opener, 8-5 in 10 innings, lost both games of Saturday's doubleheader and finished the series with a 13-9 win.

Luke Brown hit an RBI double to right field that scored
Essex Brown Jr. in the top of the first, and a second run was scored for CSUEB on a
Matthew O'Mahony sacrifice fly to left field that scored
Luke Brown for a 2-0 lead.
The Pioneers added to their tally in the top of the fifth inning on a
Manny Garcia single to right center that drove in
Luke Novitske.
The Wildcats would counter in the bottom of the sixth inning with a run.
The Pioneers extended their lead in the top of the seventh inning to 5-1 on an RBI from Garcia and a throwing error.
Chico State scored a pair of runs each in the eighth and ninth innings to even the game at 5-5, sending the game to extra innings.
With the bases loaded the top of the tenth inning,
Jacob Klinovsky delivered a pinch hit double that scored
Cole Anderson, Garcia and
Niko Mollat as Cal State East Bay led 8-5.
In the bottom of the tenth,
James Colyer entered to close out the game for Cal State East Bay. Despite allowing the baes to be loaded with no outs, Colyer struck out the final three batters he faced and finished the game for an 8-5 win.
Picking up his fourth win of the season was
Ethan Brodsky, who pitched nine innings with 11 strikeouts. Colyer earned his third save of the season.
Chico State 6, CSU East Bay 5 (Game One – Saturday)
Chico State jumped out to a 4-0 lead early in the game.
The Pioneers got one run back in the fourth inning on an RBI groundout from Mollat. However, the Wildcats answered with a sacrifice fly RBI in the bottom of the fourth by Zach Morris.
The Pioneers would cut into the Wildcats' lead with three runs – one coming on a
Jacob Froess RBI single to second base that scored O'Mahony, an error allowing Anderson to score and a third run coming on a
Samuel Esparza single to the shortstop that drove in Mollat. CSUEB trailed 5-4 in the sixth inning.
The Wildcats added a run in the seventh for a 6-4 lead
Garcia hit a sacrifice fly RBI to center field that scored
Luke Novitske in the top of the ninth, cutting the deficit to 6-5. The Pioneers would get the tying run into scoring position but they could not plate the run as Chico State won Saturday's first game.
O'Mahony went 4-for-5 in the game.
Chico State 4, CSU East Bay 3 (Game Two – Saturday)
Essex Brown Jr. singled to left field in the top of the second inning to drive in Anderson for a 1-0 CSUEB lead.
The Wildcats tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Pioneers took a 3-1 lead in the eighth on a double from Klinovsky to right field that scored Anderson and Novitske. However, Chico State answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to even the game at 3-3.
In the bottom of the ninth, Jeffrey Ray drew a bases-loaded walk for the winning run to give Chico State a 4-3 win.
Quinn Ayres led the Pioneers offensively going 3-for-3.
Cal State East Bay 13, Chico State 9 (Sunday)
Chico State scored the first five runs of the game for a 5-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth, Anderson doubled to right field driving in O'Mahony. Two more runs came across the plate for CSUEB in the fourth inning - one on an RBI groundout by Ayres that scored Garcia and one on a fielding error that scored Anderson.
The Wildcats would get a run back in the bottom of the fourth inning to lead 6-3.
The Pioneers' offense exploded for five runs in the top of the fifth inning as CSUEB took advantage of miscues by the Wildcats. A throwing error allowed O'Mahony to score a run, a wild pitch allowed Garcia to score and another error scored Anderson. Two more runs were added in the inning – one on an RBI groundout by
Samuel Esparza for a 7-6 lead and one more run in the inning after an RBI single from Novitske.
In the top of the sixth inning, the Pioneers would add three runs. Anderson launched his third home run of the season for two runs and
Luke Brown singled to center field to drive in Mollat for an 11-6 lead.
CSUEB added a run on an RBI single from Garcia single that drove in Novitske.
The Wildcats would add two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning but the Pioneers would add their final run of the game on an Anderson RBI single in the top of the ninth.
Although Chico State scored a run in the bottom of the ninth, the Pioneers finished with a 13-9 victory to close out the series with a win to split the series 2-2.
The win in the series finale went to
Anthony Perez.
- In the series, Garcia went 11-for-19 with four RBIs and four runs scored. He is currently on a five-game hit streak.
- Anderson went 8-for-18 in the series with two doubles and a home run.
- Anderson's three home runs is a team high.
- Finishing with two doubles in the series was Klinovsky.
