HAYWARD, Calif. – On Sunday, the final game of the three game series between the Cal State East Bay baseball team and Menlo did not go in favor of the Pioneers. The Oaks defeated CSUEB, 8-5 to close out the non-conference series.
Menlo took an early 2-0 lead on a bases clearing triple from Jonathan Charboneau in the top of the first inning.
In the bottom of the first,
Essex Brown Jr. led off with a single, and
Manny Garcia drew a walk. After both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt from
Luke Novitske,
Cole Coffey delivered a single to drive in Brown Jr. and Garcia to even the score at 2-2.
The Oaks broke the tie in the top of the sixth when Anthony Masetti launched a two run home run. After the home run, the next three batters reached base, and all three would score later in the inning as Menlo led 7-2 in the middle of the sixth.
In the bottom of the sixth, CSUEB got one run back as Garcia scored on a two-out error.
Menlo added a run in the top of the seventh as Masetti scored on a throwing error on an attempt to catch another runner on a stolen base attempt.
With Novitske on base in the bottom of the eighth, Coffey hit his second triple in as many days to drive in Novitske. With Coffey on third,
Luke Brown hit an infield single to drive in Coffey. The Pioneers trailed 8-5.
Although the bases were loaded after Brown's single, the Pioneers were unable to capitalize. And in the ninth inning, CSUEB did not score a run as Menlo went on to win on Sunday.
- Coffey finished with two hits, both for RBIs.
- Luke Brown also had two RBIs and currently has a team high four on the season. Brown also has a hit in all three games this season.
- In a no decision, Garrison Finck pitched 5.0 innings with four strikeouts.
