HAYWARD, Calif. – On Sunday, a non-conference doubleheader took place between Cal State East Bay baseball and Central Washington at Pioneer Baseball Field. The Pioneers dropped the first game, 2-0, but responded with a 6-0 shutout in game two to split Sunday's doubleheader.
Central Washington 2, Cal State East Bay 0
The Pioneers fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first. Charlie Larson led off the game with a single for the Wildcats, reached second base on a groundout, then after stealing third base, scored on a throwing error.
In the top of the sixth, CWU added a run when Travis Helm hit an RBI single to drive in Kevin Varner Jr.
The Pioneers had opportunities with runners in scoring position in four separate innings, but good pitching by Brayde Hirai, along with opportunistic defense by the Wildcats helf CSUEB scoreless, as CWU took the opener, 2-0.
Cole Coffey and
Luke Novitske had two hits each in game one.
Cal State East Bay 6, Central Washington 0 (7 innings)
Two errors in the first inning allowed the Pioneers to jump out to an early lead.
Essex Brown Jr. and Novitske were on base, each as a result of an error. Brown Jr. scored the first run of the game after an RBI single from Coffey.
Luke Brown hit an RBI double to drive in Novitske and
Quinn Ayres hit an RBI groundout to drive in Coffey, as CSUEB led 3-0 through one inning.
Brown Jr. led off the bottom of the fifth with a single, then
Manny Garcia drove him in with an RBI double. Later in the inning,
Luke Brown hit an RBI single to drive in Coffey as the Pioneers led 5-0.
Coffey drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the sixth, as
Samuel Esparza scored to give CSUEB a 6-0 lead.
Gabe Tanner retired the side in the top of the seventh for a complete game shutout, as the Pioneers won 6-0 to split the doubleheader.
- Tanner picked up his second shutout in as many starts, not allowing a run this season in 12 innings pitched.
- Coffey went 4-for-7 on the day with two doubles and two RBIs.
- With two hits on the day, and scoring two runs in game two was Brown Jr.
- In game one, Ethan Brodsky pitched five innings with five strikeouts and no earned runs.

"I thought our pitching was outstanding today. We gave up one earned run. Honestly, in the first game, their kid [Brayde Hirai] did a really good job and you know, we had some opportunities but we couldn't get that big hit. And the second game, the error helped us in the first, kind of got us going. I thought Cole Coffey had a really good day of hitting."
