Pioneers Split Doubleheader by Winning Series Finale

HAYWARD, Calif. – The second doubleheader of a four-game series between Cal State East Bay baseball and Central Washington took place Monday at Pioneer Baseball Field. The Pioneers lost game one, 13-7, but a late pair of runs in game two lifted them to a 4-2 win to close the series.

Essex Brown Jr. was the beneficiary of two errors in the bottom of the first inning by advancing into scoring position following a leadoff single and scoring on a fielder's choice error. Later in the inning, Manny Garcia scored on a sacrifice fly hit by Luke Brown and Quinn Ayres hit an RBI groundout to drive in Luke Novitske

The Wildcats answered in the top of the second with three runs of their own. An error allowed Ben Leid to score, Trevor Tripoli hit an RBI single and Charlie Larson hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Brady Hinkle. 

The Pioneers regained the lead in the bottom of the third ona sacrifice fly RBI by Luke Brown, and extended the lead to 5-3 on an RBI single from Samuel Esparza to drive in Cole Anderson

CWU scored four runs in the top of the fifth. RBI singles from Travis Helm, Hinkle and Tripoli, along with a bases loaded walk to Divine Ayemere game the Wildcats a 7-5 lead. 

CSUEB got one run back in the bottom of the fifth. Garcia led off with a double, and reached third base on a balk. An RBI groundout by Novitske drove in Garcia. 

Over the next three innings, Central Washington added five runs, including one directly from an error, one from a balk, another from a wild pitch, one from an RBI single and one run in the eighth was scored from a sacrifice fly.

Although the Pioneers scored one run in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single by Anderson, CWU added one run in the top of the ninth and the PIoneers did not score in the bottom of the ninth as the Wildcats took the first game of Monday's doubleheader, 13-7. 
 
Cal State East Bay 4, Central Washington 2 (7 innings)

The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a sacrifice fly RBI from Austin Ohland, and doubled the lead to 2-0 in the top of the third on an RBI single from Kevin Varner Jr. 

Essex Brown Jr. led off the bottom of the third with a walk. After stealing second and reaching third on a groundout, he scored on a wild pitch. 

On a steal Brown Jr. and wild pitch that allowed Jacob Froess to score from third base, the Pioneers scored the tying run in the bottom of the fourth to even the game at 2-2.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth for the Pioneers, Garcia delivered a single to right firld for two RBIs, as Esparza and Froess scored to give CSUEB a 4-2 lead. 

In the top of the seventh, James Colyer held the Wildcats scoreless in the inning, and finished the game for the Pioneers to earn the 4-2 win to close the series. 

In relief, Colyer picked up his first win of the season with 2.0 scoreless innings on the mound with four strikeouts.

NOTABLE STATS
  • Garcia finished the day 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBIs.
  • Although Pioneers pitchers in game one gave up 13 runs in total, only five were earned. 
  • In game one, Anderson had two hits and Luke Brown had two RBIs.

This coming Friday, a non-conference doubleheader takes place at Pioneer Baseball Field when Academy of Art visits CSUEB. Game one is set for 11 a.m., followed by game two at 2 p.m. Friday's doubleheader will include two games of a three game series.
