WAIMEA, Hawaii – The first two rounds of the 2023 HPU Sharks Shootout took place Monday at Mauna Lani Golf Course. Through 36 holes played, the Cal State East Bay men's golf team sits in fourth place among 17 teams.
The lowest scorer among the Pioneers thus far is
Melker Backstrom, who sits in a ninth place tie at 2-under-par 142. Highlighting his performance on Monday was a 3-under-par 69 in the opening round. He has six birdies among the 36 holes played.
Also among the notable performances for the Pioneers on Monday:
- Cooper Groshart had seven birdies and is tied for 12th place at 1-under-par 143 (70-73).
- Easton Hether carded a 68 in the second round and had seven birdies in the second round alone (eight birdies in total on Monday). He heads into Tuesday's final round at even par.
UT-Permian Basin leads the team scoring through two rounds and Thongsaeng Nunya from UTPB sits atop the leaderboard at 9-under-par 135 (67-68).
The final round of the HPU Sharks Shootout is set for a 7:30 a.m. HST (10:30 a.m. Pacific) shotgun start from Mauna Lani Golf Course.
