HAYWARD, Calif. – The Cal State East Bay baseball played the final game of their four-game CCAA series with CSU San Marcos on Sunday at Pioneer Baseball Field and won the game 5-2 to take three of four in the series.
The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a Francisco Pedraza single to left field that scored Essex Brown Jr. The Pioneers would tack on two more runs in the bottom of the third inning – one coming on a Luke Novitske RBI single to right field that scored Pedraza and one coming on a Matthew Mandeville RBI single to right field that scored Matthew O'Mahony, as Cal State East Bay led 3-0.
The Cougars scored twice in the top of the fourth inning – one run coming on an error allowed Mark Stanford to score and one coming on a sacrifice bunt by Adam Chadwick that scored Niko Diaz.
In the bottom of the of the fourth inning on a Manny Garcia ground out to third that drove in Brown Jr. The Pioneers' final run of the game came in the bottom of the sixth inning on a Brown Jr. RBI single that scored Samuel Esparza for a 5-2 lead.
Anthony Perez got the win for the Pioneers, which was his first of the season. Novitske led the Pioneers' offense going 3-for-3 and is batting .353 on the season.
"Good pitching today, especially from Anthony Perez," said Cal State East Bay head coach Mike Cummins. "Good series win."
The Pioneers will head to Los Angeles for their next CCAA series against Cal State L.A. The series starts this coming Thursday at 6 p.m.
