LOS ANGELES – The Cal State East Bay baseball team traveled to Southern California for a four-game CCAA series against Cal State Los Angeles. The Pioneers won the opening game of the series 7-3 on Thursday evening.
The Pioneers would get the scoring going in the top of the first inning on a Matthew O'Mahony single to right field that drove in Manny Garcia.
In the top of the second inning, the Pioneers added four runs – two coming on an O'Mahony single through the left side that scored Garcia and Francisco Pedraza, one on an Essex Brown Jr. ground out to the shortstop that scored Donovan Bailey and one on a Garcia single to left that scored Samuel Esparza.
The Golden Eagles got a run back in the bottom of the third inning on a Johnny Pacheco double to right center that scored Thomas Chavez.
However, the Pioneers would score a run in the top of the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly RBI by Garcia to center field that scored Esparza. The Pioneers would round out their scoring in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI single to right field by Bailey that scored Ryan Maciel.
Although Cal State L.A. scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Pioneers held on for a 7-3 win.
Blake Campbell got the win for the Pioneers to improve to 3-0 on the season. Garcia went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs.
"Great job by Blake Campbell out of the bullpen," said Cal State East Bay head coach Mike Cummins. "Solid job by the hitters tonight."
The Pioneers and Golden Eagles will continue their series tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m., with game two to follow at 4 p.m. from Reeder Field.
