Pioneers Rout Gators, 13-2 on Sunday to Split Series

HAYWARD, Calif. – The Cal State East Bay baseball team wrapped up its four-game series with San Francisco State on Sunday at Pioneer Baseball Field. After a 1-1 tie through five innings, the Pioneers scored 12 unanswered runs in the next three innings, en route to a 13-2 CCAA win.

The Pioneers got their scoring started in the second inning as Luke Novitske stole third base, and scored on a throwing error by the catcher. The Gators tied the game up in the top of the fifth inning on a Jo Bynum double play ball that scored Gavin Mancha.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Francisco Pedraza scored on a Matthew O'Mahony single to right field to give the Pioneers the lead for good. The Pioneer added five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, with two off a single from Novitske to drive in Manny Garcia and Francisco Pedraza

Three different doubles in the bottom of the eighth highlighted the scoring for the Pioneers. Pedraza, Connor McWard and Jacob Froess each doubled, combineing for four RBIs in the inning. Novitske also singled in a run in the inning and Esparza scored on an error.

Although the Gators would score one run in the top of the ninth, Cal State East Bay finished the series with a 13-2 victory.

In relief, Blake J. Campbell got the win for the Pioneers on the mound. Novitske went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Pedraza went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored.

CSU East Bay head coach Mike Cummins spoke following the game, "I think we were pretty resilient today and the last two games of the series to come back." Cummins also added, "We came back and showed some grit, you know. Two good wins and now we'll see what we can do next [series] against Stanislaus [State]."

The Pioneers will hit the road for their next series in Turlock for a four-game CCAA series against Stanislaus State. The first game of the series is set for Friday at 6 p.m. at Warrior Baseball Field.
