Pioneers Open Series at Stanislaus State on Friday

TURLOCK, Calif. – The Cal State East Bay baseball team traveled to Turlock for a four-game CCAA series against Stanislaus State. The Warriors defeated the Pioneers, 8-7 on a sacrifice fly RBI for a walk-off victory. 

The Warriors scored the first run of the game bottom of the third inning on a Grant Bunker ground out to shortstop that scored Cole Thompson for a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Pioneers would respond with five runs – one on a sacrifice fly to right field by Jacob Froess that scored Matthew O'Mahony, another on a Donovan Bailey single to right field that drove in Luke Novitske, two on a Samuel Esparza single that drove in Bailey and Jacob Klinovsky and the Pioneers' fifth run of the inning was on a Manny Garcia fielder's choice to the shortstop that scored Esparza.

The Warriors scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning with one coming on a JonLuke Goldman single that scored Trevor McInerney and two more on a double by Zach Jones that drove in Goldman and Danny Murphy.

Cal State East Bay scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to build to a 7-4 lead. One run came on a bases loaded hit-by-pitch that scored O'Mahony and another on a Enrique Nunez single that scored Novitske.

Stanislaus State scored one run in bottom of the eighth on a Jones sacrifice fly that scored Matt Elser. In the bottom of the ninth, the Warriors tied the game at 7-7 on a two-run home run from Elser.  After the home run, a walk, followed by a single, then another walk loaded the bases with one out. Then, Ryan Leonisio hit a sacrifice fly to center field, as Joseph Hauck scored the winning run to give Stanislaus State an 8-7 win to open the series.

Austin Balentine got the win for the Warriors and Anthony Balentine got the loss for the Pioneers. Mark Woinarowicz pitched seven innings and struck out eight. O'Mahony paced the Pioneers going 2-for-5 with two runs scored. 

The Pioneers and Warriors will play a CCAA doubleheader on Saturday in Turlock. First pitch for game one is set for 1 p.m., followed by game two at 4 p.m.
