POMONA, Calif. – The Cal State East Bay baseball team fell in both games of their doubleheader with Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday. The Pioneers lost game one, 8-5, and game two 3-2.
Game One – Cal Poly Pomona 8, CSU East Bay 5
The two teams would play the first four innings with neither team scoring a run. In the top of the fifth, the Pioneers would score runs – two on a Matthew Mandeville double to center field that scored Ryan Maciel and Francisco Pedraza, one on an Essex Brown Jr. triple down the right field line that scored Mandeville and one on a Manny Garcia triple down the right field line that scored Brown Jr. The Broncos responded with four runs of their own – three in the fifth and one in the sixth – to tie the game at 4-4 after six innings. The Pioneers took a 5-4 lead in the top of the seventh on a Matthew O'Mahony fielder's choice to shortstop that scored Brown Jr. The Broncos tied the game in bottom of the seventh and would take the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the eighth for the final tally.
The win went to AJ Moreno for the Broncos and the loss went to Anthony Perez. The Pioneers starting pitcher, Mark Woinarowicz, threw for seven innings and struck out two. Brown Jr. paced the Pioneers' offense going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI.
Game Two – Cal Poly Pomona 3, CSU East Bay 2
The Broncos were the first to strike in the seven inning second game by scoring one run in the bottom of the first and two runs in the bottom of the third for a 3-0 lead. The Pioneers would respond with two runs in the top of the fourth – one on a Luke Novitske single to center field that drove in O'Mahony and one on a double play ball by Jacob Klinovsky that scored Pedraza. The Pioneers would get no closer, however, and fell 3-2.
The win went to Edrian Rangel for the Broncos and Tristin Tatum got the loss for the Pioneers. Both O'Mahony and Pedraza went 1-3 with a run scored.
The Pioneers (10-11, 3-8 CCAA) and Broncos (12-11, 7-7 CCAA) will complete their series on Sunday at Scolinos Field. First pitch is set for 11 am.
